Knock out an adult tooth and it stays out. A mouthguard prevents that. It's one of the cheapest forms of dental insurance you can buy.

Sport mouthguards for children at our Family Dentist just 10 mintues drive from Moonee Ponds

Any sport involving body contact or missiles like pucks and cricket balls puts teeth at risk and children are the most important group to protect. Adult teeth that get knocked out, cracked, or pushed sideways at age ten create problems that last decades. Repairs are possible, but they're never as good as the original tooth. Our custom mouthguards made from impressions of your child's teeth offer superior protection and comfort as they are moulded specifically for your childs mouth. They fit snugly, stay in during impact, and don't interfere with breathing or talking. Unlike a custom mouthguard a store bough one is bulky and sits loosely. If this is the only option available use it before  a game and consider a properly fitted option later.

One thing parents miss: kids' teeth change fast. A mouthguard that fitted at age eight won't fit at age eleven. Check the fit each season and replace it when it shifts around.

Nighttime grinding

Bruxism is the medical term for involuntary teeth grinding and clenching. More commonly seen during sleep it can also present itself while awake and is often triggered by stress. It's common in both kids and adults, and most people doing it have no idea. In children, the signs are worn or flattened teeth, jaw soreness in the morning, and headaches. In adults, a partner usually hears it first. Grinding wears enamel down slowly. Teeth get shorter, more sensitive, and more likely to crack. The jaw joint takes strain too. Left alone for years it causes chronic jaw pain. A nightguard sits between the upper and lower teeth and absorbs the grinding force. It doesn't stop the habit, but it stops the damage. Again, fit matters. A loose guard falls out or causes discomfort. It needs to be custom-made from impressions taken at a dental practice.

When to book a mouthguard fitting

Before the season starts, not after a collision. A mouthguard you don't have yet doesn't help. When grinding signs appear. Worn teeth, morning jaw soreness, and headaches are the main signals. A regular checkup at a family dentist will also pick up grinding damage before symptoms start, which is another reason not to skip them. As soon as adult teeth arrive. There's no minimum age for a custom sports mouthguard.
