Extractions remove an infected, inflamed or severely compromised or broken-down tooth that cannot be saved. Sometimes, teeth are removed if there is crowding, as part of an orthodontic plan.
 
Wisdom teeth are often removed if spacing is limited, or if their presence is causing damage to an adjacent tooth. They can also be removed as a preventive measure to help avoid problems in the future, if decay is present, or if the gums surrounding the wisdom teeth get inflamed or infected. Often, being so far back, they are hard to maintain and keep clean.
